Coast by Kayra Review: Indian Seafood Delight

Coast by Kayra review

Kayra is not a stranger to those who have wandered in the Malaysian food scene. Following Kayra’s first establishment in Bangsar Village, Coast by Kayra recently opened in Starhill Gallery cooking up Keralan seafood delicacies in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

There are plenty of Indian dining establishments in Malaysia, but when I heard about a seafood focused Indian restaurant, I knew I had to give it a go – and I can safely say it did not disappoint!

First impressions

The restaurant decor and ambience was extremely fitting for a “Coast” theme. From the walls and tiles, to the sofas and artwork, we were welcomed by a wave of ocean blue setting with hints of tropical greenery. Even the ceramic serving plates were reminiscent of sea shell patterns! I was thoroughly impressed by the attention to detail. This establishment would make a great date night spot if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty with delicious curry in a classy setting.

Their menu comprises of small plates and big sharing plates with a mostly on seafood with limited meat and poultry choices. We came with 2 people but I’d recommend to get a bigger party to try more dishes, as some dishes like the biriyanis are meant for 4 people to share. Nevertheless, we managed to narrow down the dishes for us to get a good feel of the food here.

What we ordered

  • Mini Prawn Appams – RM38
  • Roasted Cauliflower – RM32
  • Snapper Fillet Curry – RM60
  • Seafood Moilee – RM95
  • Herb Butter Naan – RM18
  • Appam – RM10

We started with the Mini Prawn Appams. Having this as my first bite of the food of the day (Skipped breakfast for this!) – this was a great flavour bomb of introduction for the next dishes to come. I was first met with the hot and smoky marinade of a fresh and tender prawn, with the pillowy appam completing the bite. Greta flavours and textures – a starter I would return for.

For mains, the Snapper Fillet Curry was a tenderly cooked fillet submerged in a creamy and tangy tomato based curry. It was topped with some caviar giving the curry a slight fishy finish. Perfect to dip in with the appam we ordered on the side. A dish done well.

The Seafood Moilee was a creamy coconut-based curry, spiced with birds eye chilli so watch out for that! Although filled with clams and mussels, what stood out to us was the freshness of the prawns. If you’re a fan of prawn heads like me, the prawn heads just became extra creamy with the coconut curry, and the flesh was cooked perfect to the bounce.

The Roasted Cauliflower was the perfect break from curries. The cauliflower was roasted in a peppery marinade. I’m not too sure what the toppings or puree were, but it was slightly sweet, with a white paste (I believe a mild cheese of sort was used from the flavour) and a sprinkle of pomegranates to finish off the bite.

The appam was a great side dish to soak up the seafood curries. The naan was buttery and flaky, but nothing astonishing to shout for the flatbread.

Overall, it was a great dining experience from flavours, ambience, to service. We hope to be back again with a bigger party to try their other sharing plates very soon.

Parking

As the restaurant is located in Starhill Gallery, that was the most convenient parking spot. Check out the latest parking rate for Starhill here.
