Planning some date ideas in KL with your loved one? Here are some date ideas we’ve personally tried that we’d recommend. Read on for our review and see which date idea you’re feeling for!
1. Workshop dates
Workshop dates are perfect to learn more about a new person, and to spend quality time together with your loved one while having fun. Both of you will get to showcase your personality throughout the process, learn a new skill that you can cherish together! Here are some workshop ideas to try:
Batik Workshop at Jadi Batek Gallery, Jalan Imbi
We never had any experience with batik (Using wax and dye to create art on a cloth) growing up so the whole creation process was super eye opening to us. The workshop was held in the actual batik creation factory, so we could see all the pros create amazing art effortlessly. As a date, it was fun to learn the batik techniques together.
Our workshop host was also very patient and friendly – although we exceeded our time limit (as we were first timers), she was more than happy to guide us through the extra time we needed. The drying and washing process is all handled by the workshop host so you’ll just have to turn up and showcase your art skills.
If this sounds like a good date idea, you can book a session with Jadi Batek Gallery here!
Sip and Paint at Art & Bonding Studio, Desa Sri Hartamas
Perhaps you’d like to discover your inner Picasso with your date – Sip and Paint is a painting workshop served with wine or orange juice. Although we never really painted before, the instructor keeps instructions super clear and goes around to help everyone out. We found this to be a great date to bond with conversations over drinks, and we get to bring home a piece of art of fond memories.
You can book a session with Art & Bonding Studio here! Pro tip: You can check out Art & Bonding’s event calendar to know what they’re painting on certain dates so you can pick your art (The whale was one of the easiest, there are more advanced ones!)
Tufting Workshop
Tufting is probably the most unique workshop date we’ve been on, since we got to hold a tufting gun and create our own masterpiece (You can pre-select your own design). You can also opt to work together on one shared frame to create a piece of art together! It’s also super Instagrammable with the wall of colourful rug yarns.
You can book a session with Happy Hour Club Cafe & Workshop here! P.S. They use a weighted tufting system so you won’t have sore arms after a long day of tufting.
2. Unique experience dates
VR gaming at VAR Live, MyTown Shopping Centre
If you and your date like gaming activities, at VAR Live you will get to put on VR headsets and work together to go through virtual reality challenges together! It was a very immersive experience since you’re wearing headsets and holding actual equipment like katana and guns too. We mostly played the action and zombie games but there are 13 different options to pick from. Pro tip: Go in a bigger group if you can (Double date?), as 2 pax will be limit you to more kid-friendly games.
You can book a session with VAR Live here!
Escape Room at Breakout, Nu Sentral
If you prefer the real world but with a similar immersive experience, Escape Rooms are usually a great date to consider! You and your date will be put in a themed room where both of you can bond over your teamwork and problem solving skills to solve puzzles and challenges to break out of the room. We always have a great experience with Breakout as from the design of the rooms and audio, to the storyline leaves us wanting for more.
You can grab a discounted price here, and then decide later on which rooms you want to play here!
3. Bazaar and Arts date
Artisanal Marketplace at Kedai KL, Petaling Jaya
Kedai KL hosts an artisanal market that showcases local business owner’s crafted products – from clothing, to jewelery and food. It can be a great shopping date to pick up cute accessories, while enjoying some great cafes in the building. Our favourite spot to eat there is Three Guys cafe that serves up Japanese fusion food!
Art Gallery at Balai Seni Negara, Jalan Tun Razak
One of the most underrated date locations we love is the National Art Gallery. The entrance is completely free and if you’re both art lovers, you can bond over the traditional and modern art that belongs to Malaysia. Parking is free too!
Arts and Culture Hub at Rex KL, Petaling Street
Rex KL has become the spot for Gen Zs in recent years so what’s stopping you and your date to be cool? It used to be a burned down cinema from the late 1900s which was rebuilt into a space for lifestyle shops, cafes, food, and the occasional events (Check their Instagram!). The Book Xcess in Rex KL also has a modern brutalist vibe, making it a Instagram favourite of many couples.
P.S Boys if you’re reading this – pick up some affordable flowers just nearby at Lee Wah florist to make their day!
4. Nature and Picnic dates
Perdana Botanical Gardens, Kuala Lumpur
If you and your date are fitness or outdoor enthusiasts, or that you fancy a picnic date, Perdana Botanical Garden is a beautiful park located in the centre of Kuala Lumpur perfect for dates. Spend time together walking around the famous Lake Gardens or pick a shady seat to enjoy some packed food and drinks. Parking is also readily available around the garden.
P.S Go in the morning so it’s not that hot!
Kayaking at Kelab Tasik Putrajaya
If you’re up for a more adventurous date, check out kayaking at Kelab Tasik Putrajaya! Hop in a double kayak together and kayak your way around the Putrajaya Lake while overseeing the beautiful floating mosque. Starting at RM20 for a double kayak, it’s a great date for those who want to be closer to the waters but do go early to avoid the heat.
