Review: Environment, Climbing Walls and Routesetting

1. Environment

BUMP Bouldering PBJ is well lit with plenty of sunlight shining from the huge glass panels, and it’s fully air-conditioned so don’t worry about the heat. From our experience, it’s also always very clean.

2. Climbing Walls

The gym boasts a variety of vertical, overhang, and slab walls that gives plenty of room to experiment with different types of climbing styles. So, do expect to be challenged by the routesetting team when climbing here. There is also a Kilter Board at the gym.

Here are some shorter walls, mainly vertical and slab walls.

Lockers at BUMP Bouldering

Currently there are no locked lockers available (under maintenance), but open shelves are available in various sections of the gym. From our experience, we haven’t had any issues with leaving our bags in the open shelves. However, do keep your personal belongings safe at your own risk.

There is a small gym space at the end of the space. It has a bench, some mats, a dumbbell rack and a couple kettlebells. Not the most extensive setup but decent for a quick warmup and some weight exercises.

Why BUMP Bouldering stands out to us

Routesetting and grading

In comparison to other gyms, the problems at BUMP are a dynamic variety. The easier grades are beginner-friendly and introduces the new climber to try out different body positioning and techniques in a gradual way.

The unique grading system also encourages climbers mentally to push themselves further without feeling a big jump in difficulty.

We find that the setters also use the wall angles extremely well in setting climbs that allows climbers to use different techniques.

Community and vibes

We think that BUMP offers one of the friendliest, most inclusive, and encouraging climbing experience in Malaysia. We have to give credit to the staff and climbing community there for creating this vibe. You can see that across social media, but try it out yourself if you haven’t!

FAQ for first timers

1. What do I have to bring?

Go in comfortable active attire, bring along a bottle, a change of clothes (it gets chalky!), and a pair of socks if you’re renting shoes.

2. How long should I expect to spend in the gym?

We recommend you to set aside 2-3 hours. That will leave you ample time to explore the gym, attempt challenging problems, and most importantly to rest between your attempts!

3. Any tips if I haven’t climbed before?

Keep your arms straight when you climb, get comfortable with falling, land safely, keep an open mind, and don’t be shy to ask for help! People at BUMP are friendly 🙂

4. What are some other nearby bouldering gyms?

You can check out B-Hub Bouldering Petaling Jaya, BUMP Bouldering at Jaya One or Camp5 at KL Eco City.
