8 Best Food in PJ (Petaling Jaya Restaurants)

best food in pj

Looking for the best food in PJ? Here are our 8 favourite restaurants that we go to on a regular basis:

1. Table and Apron

Located in the neighbourhood of Damansara Kim, we love Table and Apron for how simple their food and menu is, yet the flavours are unique and intricate. They are a local and western fusion restaurant, yet the dishes perfectly balance each other out. The service is always superb, price is affordable, and with a good selection of in-house drinks and alcohol selections too.

Our go-to orders are the miso-mushroom pasta, buckwheat fried chicken, pork ribs in pineapple glaze, and pork chop with watercress. We’d highly recommend booking a table in advance on their website. You can check out their menu here.

2. Kompassion

Kompassion

Just a few shops down from Table and Apron stands a contemporary Thai spot. Probably our favourite Thai restaurant in the Greater KL area, Kompassion introduces classic Thai flavours in its delicate way using creative ways of cooking their quality ingredients. It also serves up a variety of Thai drinks and desserts.

We love their Som Tam Mango (So fresh), Gaeng Thae Pho (Melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with Thai Curry) and Tom Yum Goong. Our advice is to gather a couple of friends and family, as their portions are meant for sharing (And you’ll get more variety!). Do book a table in advance as its a pretty popular spot. You can check out their menu here.

3. Grub

Grub

Grub is where you get everything you’d expect from a high-end steakhouse minus the marbled tables, chandeliers, and flashy utensils. The beef, lamb, or quail items here are always fresh, juicy, and tender. The meats are served up in classic western (Beef Wellington) or Asian ways (with Ramyeon or rice), so there’s a plate for everyone at Grub. There’s also a range of beef cuts for you to choose, from the classic New York strip steak, to an Angus ribeye, or a Wagyu Tomahawk.

The portions are huge and are great value for money. Here’s the menu and where you can book.

4. Slurrp

A humble shop in SS2, Slurrp is a Sarawakian eatery serving up authentic food from Sarawak, owned by a Sarawak local. No booking is required but do expect to wait a little during busy lunch hours. Prices are affordable and to our personal taste, Slurrp’s flavours are not refreshing and not too overpowering – which lets the ingredients’ flavours shine through.

Check out our full review of Slurrp here (Menu included).

5. Curry Shokudo

Situated in the hustle and bustle of Taman Paramount, Curry Shokudo is a quaint Japanese Curry house that serves up a variety Japanese curry dishes. Often paired with tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) and braised pork belly, the dish is completed with a choice of rice or udon. They also have a special black curry option, but we prefer the classic Japanese curry. Do check out their menu here.

6. Acha Curry House

Acha Curry House

Acha Curry House is a well-known banana leaf rice spot in PJ, since its days in Jalan Gasing, it has now moved to SS2. Everyone has their favourite banana leaf rice spot, but Acha stands out to us as their food doesn’t make us feel “jelak” (overly full), as it’s not too oily or salty.

Do expect to queue for 15 to 20 minutes during busy hours.

7. Ramen Bar Shi Shi Do

A long-standing ramen shop in PJ, Ramen Bar Shi Shi Do is located in The Gasket Alley. They serve up their classic ramen options (which you can mix different broths to create your own), tsukemen and yakitori options. We love their broth for how aromatic they are, but also the fact that we can experiment our own flavours too!

Only walk-ins are allowed, so do arrive early to avoid being on a long waitlist.

8. Staple Dough

Staple Dough is a pasta place that prides itself on its handmade pasta, while serving up other mains, snacks, and desserts. Upon walking in, you’ll be welcomed by an open kitchen where you’ll see the chefs serving up the dishes. We love the pasta as the flavours are deep, and the texture of the handmade pasta is unique to many other places. The ingredients are of top quality, but may be pricier for the size.

Check out their full menu here, while you can make your reservation here.
